Who Can Be a Dependent?

Eligible dependents that can be covered under NYSHIP by enrolling in family coverage or by adding eligible dependents to existing family coverage include:

  • spouse
  • domestic partner
  • children - including adopted children, stepchildren, or children who live with you and are financially dependent on you (for example, a grandchild who lives with you)

To add a dependent, use the New York State Health Insurance Transaction Form (PS-404).

Continuing Medical Coverage for Children

Your child is eligible to continue health insurance coverage through the month in which they turn 26.

Your child is eligible to continue dental and vision insurance coverage through the month in which they turn 19. If your child is between the ages of 19-25, they can continue dental and vision coverage only if they are a full-time student and you provide verification to Emblem Health of their full-time student status. If student verification is not provided your child will be removed from coverage.

If you have dental and vision coverage through your union (CSEA, UUP, or DC-37) you must contact them directly for help.

What Is the Young Adult Option?

The Young Adult Option allows your child to purchase individual health insurance coverage through NYSHIP. For eligibility and cost information refer to the NYSHIP book.
